How Much Does It Cost to Start a Podcast in 2026? Real Numbers

By Tyler Santone · Ranch House Studios, Bartonville, TX

Most articles about podcast costs are written by people selling microphones. Here's the actual math, from a studio that publishes its prices and has watched a lot of first-time podcasters figure out what things really cost.

The DIY route: $800–$3,500 before you sound good

A podcast people will actually listen to needs decent audio, and if you want to grow in 2026, video. Here's a realistic starter list for a two-person video podcast at home:

  • Two dynamic microphones that don't pick up your air conditioner: $200–$700
  • Audio interface or mixer: $150–$500
  • Two cameras that shoot clean 4K (or even good 1080p): $400–$1,600
  • Lighting so you don't look like a hostage video: $100–$400
  • Boom arms, stands, cables, SD cards: $150–$300
  • Acoustic treatment, because your spare bedroom echoes: $100–$500

That's the gear. Then there's the part nobody budgets for: your time. Setting up, tearing down, syncing multi-cam footage, cleaning up audio — plan on 3–6 hours of work for every hour of finished episode when you're doing it all yourself. Most podcasts that die in the first ten episodes don't die from lack of ideas. They die from editing.

The studio route: $150–$360 per session, zero gear

A professional studio flips the math. At Ranch House Studios in Bartonville, a self-serve session — we set everything up, hit record, and leave you to it — is a flat $75 an hour: $150 for two hours, $225 for three, $300 for four. Want a producer running cameras and the board while you just talk? That's $200 to $360 depending on session length. Either way you walk out the same day with broadcast-quality audio and multi-cam 4K video, no gear owned, nothing to troubleshoot.

If you record monthly, packages drop the cost further — from $179/month for a producer-run three-hour session, or $149/month self-serve.

The recurring costs everyone forgets

  • Hosting your podcast feed: $10–$50/month (we handle it for $50/month if you'd rather not think about RSS)
  • Editing: DIY is free-but-slow; outsourced editors run $75–$300 per episode; our rate is $50 per recorded hour for full audio and video editing
  • Social clips: the growth engine in 2026 — count on either hours of your time per episode or $100 per episode to have them cut with captions

So what should you actually spend?

If you're testing an idea: don't buy gear. Book a single studio session for less than the price of one decent microphone and find out if you like making the show. If you're committed to weekly episodes and love the technical side, DIY can make sense over a couple of years. And if your time is worth more than $75 an hour — which is true for most business owners we work with — the studio math wins basically forever.
