How Long Should a Podcast Episode Be? What the Data Actually Says

By Tyler Santone · Ranch House Studios, Bartonville, TX

The most common question new podcasters ask, and the most common wrong answer they get, is about episode length. The wrong answer is a single magic number. The right answer is: as long as your content stays good, and no longer — but here are the real benchmarks by format.

Benchmarks by show type

  • Solo expert commentary: 15–30 minutes. One topic, tight, done. These map to commutes and gym sessions.
  • Business and niche interview shows: 30–50 minutes. Long enough for real depth, short enough to respect a working audience.
  • Conversational co-host shows: 45–75 minutes. The audience is there for the hangout; cutting it short kills the appeal.
  • Narrative and documentary-style: 25–40 minutes. Production density matters more than duration.

The rule that actually matters

Listeners don't abandon episodes because they're long. They abandon them because they're padded. A tight 50 minutes outperforms a meandering 25. If your download graphs show people falling off at the same timestamp every episode, that's where your padding lives — usually a slow intro or a mid-episode drift. Cut ruthlessly there before worrying about total length.

Video changed the math

In 2026 most growing shows are video-first, and video splits your length question in two: the full episode lives on YouTube and podcast feeds at its natural length, while 30–90 second vertical clips do the discovery work on Shorts, Reels, and TikTok. This is why we cut four captioned clips from every edited episode — the episode is the product, but the clips are the marketing.

Practical advice for your first ten episodes

Pick the short end of your format's range and hit it consistently. It's easier to earn the right to go longer than to un-bore an audience. A 25-minute episode also means a two-hour studio session yields two full episodes — which makes your per-episode cost lower and your publishing buffer bigger while you find your voice.

However long your episodes run, they should sound like you mean it. That part we can help with.
